Sonata (1993, revised 2005)

  • for piano solo
  • duration: 6:45

This piano sonata consists of three movements played attacca each with a distinctive style or mood culminating in a joyful toccata-like finale. In the post-modern tradition there are some musical quotations from sources as diverse as Chopin, Webern, and the Broadway musical Guys & Dolls.

This work was one of five winning compositions in the 2025 Abundant Silence Composition Contest: with the contest judges noting its “creative interpretation and expansion of a traditional classical form,” and adding that “the work drives forward with a distinctive rhythmic excitement, leading to an exciting listening experience.”
